Ya OK Yeah – Self-Titled

Whether it be from Ana-Lyz’s fully facetted voice, from Fabz sick guitar rifts, or from the crazy lyrics that creep up, from the beginning to the end Ya OK Yeah will throw listeners for a loop. They will not know what’s coming next, but they will not be able to get enough.

The album opens with “Monster,” which has an awesome groove throughout the entire song and Ana-Lyz’s voice sounds deeper and more mellow. The music sounds as if it’s simply an electric guitar and drums, but they fuel the song. This track is a little more laid back than some of their other songs. At one point the song may throw you off the following lyrics are sung at the end of the song. One might wish they could figure out what the lyrics really mean.

Soon I opened the box,
and my heart stopped when I saw,
my own head, my own head, was inside the box,
my head said you monster, you monster, you monster!

“Get Out!” starts as a happy, rocking song, but that quickly changes. It is a song about someone coming home to their girlfriend in their bed with a man. Throughout the majority of the song Ana-Lyz sings, “Get out of my bed.” It’s about literally getting out of their bed, her head, and perhaps getting out of her life. You can really hear the anger in her voice and listeners can hear the top of her register when she’s yelling, she almost squeaks, but it’s perfect for the song.

The four songs featured on the album seem a little repetitive, but listeners will be singing the lyrics within an hour of listening to this album. You’ll know exactly what the song title is by the first verse of the song. It also shows that Ya OK Yeah are extremely passionate about their lyrics and they’re memorable.

Here’s an interview so we can get to know Ya OK Yeah!

Please tell me a little bit about your background in music and how your band formed.

YOY:
Fabz and I (Ana) shared fews gigs with our former bands but we didn’t really stay in touch. It took several years before Facebook made our roads cross again: I sent a ‘last chance before I quit music for good’ and Fabz answered. We shared hundreds of email about what Ya OK Yeah would be like and basically about everything, and after a few weeks of numerical work, we began early summer 2011 to rehearse for real.

What was it like writing the lyrics, creating The Ya OK Yeah EP, and now sharing it with fans?

YOY:
We had never played live before recording this EP. We wanted to introduce ourselves by bringing something to people, not only as a ‘visit card’ but also as a real piece of work. It was a risk because we knew that we would find out what people think of our music. We were ready to say ‘Thank you’ when they like it and honest enough with ourselves to say ‘So what?’ when they don’t. So we crossed that bridge when curiosity was bigger that the fear of bad feedback by releasing the 4 tracks we wanted people to hear.
The Ya OK Yeah EP was recorded and mixed by Oli Whitworth at Boog Studios (UK) then mastered by George Shilling at Bank Cottage Studio (UK). Miikey Dean Smith played all the drums. They were our first professional feedback, they did a great job, and it helped us go farther into curiosity.

I see you released two live songs last month as well. Were they recorded in front of an audience? If so, where were they recorded?

YOY: They were recorded on June 21st. We were on stage for the first time (Fête de la Musique – Grasse, FR), and at the end of our set, we found out that the gig was broadcasted live on Agora FM (French radio station). We’ve also been interviewed after the gig.

Do you have any upcoming live shows or tour in the works?

YOY: Yes!
- October 20th @ Le Lounge, Marseille (FR) w/ The Host
- November 23rd @ The Dublin Castle, London w/ The Kubricks

Anything you’d like to share with IMR Readers?
